The choking game

Parents have talks with their kids about drinking, sex, school, friends, etc… but there’s another thing that’s become popular over the past decade or so that is having some unintended consequences. It’s called the choking game and “The purpose is when you have restricted oxygen and blood flow to your brain, you get a euphoric rush,” … “Kids have described it as a fuzzy feeling, where your vision goes black and you get very woozy. That is the sensation that they are looking for, and once that happens the pressure is released, whether it is a friend holding them or the ligature, the blood that was then dammed up is rushing into your brain, giving you a secondary sensation.”

That quote comes from this AOL article in which an 11 year old boy accidentally killed himself playing the game.

There’s even a website dedicated to informing parents and teens on this game/behavior.

If you see the game being played, you have to stop it. Teens don’t understand that the consequences could be seizures, memory loss, broken bones, permanent brain damage or even death. Lawsuits can follow in cases where you see it happening and don’t stop it.

Is this intended to be a milder form of auto-erotic asphyxiation?

I’m not sure I would say that as much as I would say that auto-erotic is the “adult” version of the choking game. I don’t think kids (especially 9 to 11) would even know what auto-erotic is.

That young!?! You wouldn’t think the simplest forms of self-preservation (like, don’t block your breathing passages) would have to be taught.
